Abstract

The presence of pharmaceutical products in aqueous matrices has become an environmental issue increasingly studied worldwide. The discharge of wastewater without any treatment or after an inappropriate treatment in water bodies has been identified as a major source of these contaminants in the environment. In this sense, the objective of this research was to test different micropollutants removal processes in isolation form or in different combinations for removal of pharmaceuticals. Thus, treatments were tested with ozonation, ionization, activated carbon, UV light and photo-Fenton, demonstrating the efficiency of all processes in isolation or in combination, particularly in the removal of 17α-ethinylestradiol and paracetamol. In general, treatments involving oxidation of hydroxyl radical and activated carbon adsorption removal achieved the best results, while the others showed variable results, depending on the analyzed pharmaceutical. The treatment process with ozonation and filtration with activated carbon may be alternatives for wastewater treatment, aiming to minimize the impacts of micropollutants in question. Further, the indication of use of the treatments alone or in different combinations will depend, in addition to technical issues, economic issues, which are not discussed here.
