Abstract

As in the rest of the world, Brazil is increasingly facing problems related to water scarcity. Understanding water uses are a promising way to plan available resources and prevent new crises. This study aims to estimate the residential consumption of potable water, identify the consumption profile of families in the monitored households, and assess how seasonal aspects affect water use. A smart meter was installed at the outlet of the upper reservoir of 15 homes in Goiânia for a year to collect water consumption and the development of a machine learning algorithm classifying data in end uses. The research demonstrated possibilities in obtaining data on water end uses, identification of peak consumption times, variations in water use about the days of the week, and the correlation between water use and climate variables, justifying the adoption of smart metering solutions in water planning by allowing greater depth of analysis.
