Abstract

The objective of this work is to evaluate the occurrence of anomalies in the rainfall regime in the Cachoeira hydrographic river basin (CHRB), in southern Bahia, and analyze their relationship with the occurrence of disasters related to precipitation in order to support actions to combat natural disasters in the region. region. This study used monthly precipitation data from five pluviometric stations, from 1992 to 2022, provided by the National Water and Basic Sanitation Agency – ANA and records of hydrological and climatological disasters that occurred in the same area and period, provided by the Integrated Information System about Disasters. To characterize the degree of severity of dry and rainy periods, the Rain Anomaly Index (IAC) was calculated and to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of disasters and rainfall anomalies, the annual IAC data were compared with data of disasters collected, and the correspondence between them is analyzed. The results indicated a decadal change in the rainfall pattern, with alternation between drier and wetter periods. Intense rainfall was responsible for 82% of water disasters in the basin, with 2021 and 2022 recording the majority of these events and significant damage.
