Abstract

Climate change results in the intensification of extreme events. Characterizing the spatio-temporal variability of precipitation allows these events to be quantified. Determining precipitation variability is of great importance to scientific knowledge, as it allows understanding trends and climate changes on different scales. This study evaluates the temporal irregularity of annual, semi-annual and monthly precipitation in the territory of Brazil based on the temporal irregularity index. The determination of the index values was developed in 1306 rainfall stations with series longer than 25 years, considering the period from 1990 to 2020. The geostatistical method of ordinary kriging was applied for spatialization and interpolation of values for locations without rainfall data. The index values on a monthly basis found throughout the Brazilian territory vary from 0 to 2.755. In the semiannual interval, the values varied from 0.110 to 1.784, while on the annual basis they ranged from 0.088 to 0.666. The North, Central-West and South regions have the lowest temporal irregularity, while the greatest temporal irregularity predominates in the Brazilian Northeast. The values found show the particularities of each region, influenced by the different atmospheric systems operating in the territory.
